How to prepare for an interview

How you prepare for an interview will have a direct result on the outcome of the interview. Most students think preparation only requires being ready to tell the interviewer who they are and what they have done. Wrong! Your job is to convince the interviewer you are the right person for the job and this requires more than simply answering questions.

As soon as you receive notification of the interview your preparation begins. Start by contacting the company or interviewer to accept and/or confirm the interview date, time and place. Also inquire who you will be meeting and if there is a job description (if you haven’t already seen one).

In the days before, prepare for the interview by researching the company, their web site, their market and competition (if applicable).

The day before the interview prepare by assembling your interview kit consisting of your resume, references and portfolio if required. Be sure to take a pad and pen with you to the interview. Most importantly, the day before, decide your wardrobe for the interview. Students always question what to wear to an interview. Remember, this is your job interview and you want to impress them and show them you are serious about the job. Dress in what makes you feel good. If you feel good, you will look good.

Prepare your opening speech for the interview and review the responses you will give for all the typical interview questions. Make a list of the questions you are going to ask them and decide your closing speech. Finally…always call to confirm the interview the day before and then… get a good night’s sleep.

The day of the interview arrive early, turn off your cell phone and get ready to make a great impression.

When preparing for an interview there are no shortcuts. Every step gives you an opportunity to show you are organized, confident and serious about wanting the job. Every step gives you an opportunity to be better than your competition.

Preparing properly for the interview will increase your chances of a successful result and show you are better than your competition.
